Hands On Spine & Micro Endoscopic Skull Base Workshop

The Pakistan Society of Neurosurgeons has emerged as one of the most active neurological societies of South Asia conducting Annual Meetings, Workshops and training courses for young neurosurgeons across the nation. The 28th Annual Conference of the Pakistan Society of Neurosurgeons was hosted by the Liaqat National Hospital and Medical College Karachi from 19th to 22nd November 2015.

The first two days of the conference comprised of two simultaneous Hands-on Cadaveric Spine Workshop and the Endoscopic/Microscopic Skull Base Workshop conducted by the World Spinal Column Society (WSCS) and the Asian Congress of Neurological Surgeons (ACNS) respectively.

The hands-on cadaveric spine workshop was led by the elite faculty comprising Douglas Orr (USA), Gregory Trost (USA), Hyeun Sung Kim (Korea), Ioannis Polythodorakis (Greece), Nikolay Angelov Peev (UK), Maximillian Mehdorn (Germeny), Joachim Oertel (Germany), Russell Andrews (USA), Sandeep Vaishya (India), PS Ramani (India), Rully Hanafi Dahlan (Indonesia) and Muhammad Tariq Imtiaz (Saudia Arabia).

A series of lectures was conducted by the elite faculty and guest speakers focusing on Cranio-Cervical Approaches, Cervical trauma, Minimally invasive options for thoracolumbar procedures, endoscopic lumbar spine disc and aspects of neurophysiological monitoring. Three hands-on sessions were conducted to enable the participants learn the techniques of Odontoid screw and dorsal cervical approaches and fixation; Dorsal and dorsolateral approaches to thoracic spine; and minimally invasive spine/endoscopic Discectomy. Live surgery was displayed to the participants during which Dr. Lim performed a trans sacral epiduroscopic laser decompression and Dr. Oertel performed a live endoscopic discectomy.

The workshop was wrapped up by a short quiz for the participants’ followed by dinner.

The Endoscopic/Microscopic Skull Base Workshop was led by the elite faculty including Iype Cherian (Nepal), Albert Sufianov (Russia), Khalid Mehmood (Pak), Salman Sharif (Pak), Tariq Salahuddin (Pak), Ramesh Nair (Pak), Christophe Destreux (France), Cigdem Mamcu (Turkey).

Talks were delivered to the participants regarding the principles of Open Skull Based surgery and endoscopic approaches to skull based tumors. Dr. Iype Cherian presented his theory of Cisternostomy/ Clinoidotomy as a means of reducing the ICP.  Translabrynthine approaches to the CP Angle tumors were taught by Albert Sufianov and an Endonasal approach was discussed by Dr. Nair. There was one hands-on Cadaveric session during which OZ Approach and Clinoidectomy/ Cisternostomy repair was practiced. The live surgery session was performed by Ramesh Nair (UK), using a Supra-orbital approach for a sellar lesion.

This two-day workshop was ended by a small quiz and series of case presentations by the faculty.

There was a Boat Trip for Faculty on 19th November and the Faculty was very delighted to see the Sunset. High Tea was served in the Evening and this was followed up by the Dinner with Live Cooking on the Boat. On 20th November, the Dinner was arranged at DHA Golf Club which was a Casual Dinner and the Musical Night. Souvenirs were distributed among the International Guest Faculty. Faculty enjoyed the Music and Faculty and Participants danced on the Beats after which Dinner was served.
