3rd ACNS Educational Course Karachiiiiiiii


Asian Congress of Neurological Surgeons is a world body of Neurosurgeons which works for the interest and the betterment of the trainees of young neurosurgeons worldwide. The congress consists of the top neurosurgeons from Asia who exchange innovative technology and share experiences through society meetings. ACNS aims to provide an equal opportunity to all the young neurosurgeons by conducting educational workshops and courses. Keeping this tradition, ACNS in collaboration with the Department of Neurosurgery of Liaquat National Hospital and Medical College and Pakistan Society of Neurosurgeons organized a comprehensive didactic and ‘hands on’ 3rd ACNS Educational Course from 14th to 16th February, 2014 in Liaquat National Hospital and Medical College. The first day of the prestigious ACNS workshop was based on ‘hands on’ Endovascular, Vascular and Cadaver Spine Workshops simultaneously. The Vascular and the Endovascular Workshop was directed by designated team of renowned neurosurgeons from Japan, consisting of Naoya Kuwayama, Akio Hyodo and Daniel Sandmann. The hands on workshop on Cadaver spine was directed by M Zileli (Turkey) and Salman Sharif (Pakistan). Joachim Oertel (Germany) demonstrated live endoscopic discectomy case for the audience. Case discussions were done by Russell Andrews, Mehmet Zileli, Joachim Oertel and Salman Sharif. And the day ended in beautiful Ambala Corniche Restaurant, where the faculty and the participants were entertained for dinner under full moon.

On the first day of the Educational Course, the well-known faculty of Neurosurgeons discussed various topics. Talks on Mini-open TLIF/ELIF/PLIF using percutaneous screw fixation, lumbar disc degeneration and intra-cranial endoscopy were discussed by M. Zileli, Joachim Oertel, Hyeun Sun Kim, and Russell Andrews. A vascular session was conducted by Yoko Kato, Naoya Kuwayama and Eka Julianta. This was followed by a session of case discussion by Gregory Trost from Wisconsin, USA (via Skype). And the second day ended with a Banquet Dinner at the Governor House Karachi, which was honored by the presence of the Governor, Dr. Ishrat-ul-Ebad Khan, who was the Chief Guest of the event. The dinner turned out to be a great social gathering which began by Dr Salman Sharif, Dr Salman Faridi, Dr Junaid Ashraf, and Professor Yoko Kato thanking all the honored guests and speakers for giving their precious time for this educational course which will help the upcoming neurosurgeons of Pakistan. At the end certificates and shields were given to the entire faculty by Honorable Dr. Ishrat-ul-Ebad, who especially thanked the faculty that from across the world to make this event successful.

On the last day, there was discussion on Clipping Surgery and Endovascular Neurosurgery by Yoko Kato, Kentaro Mori and H. Sun Kim, followed by session on Endoscopic techniques on Spine Surgery and management of tumors and multi-level cervical degeneration by Joachim Oertel, Azmi Alias, Sandeep Vaishya, and T. Salahuddin. And at the end, a quiz was conducted by Khalid Mahmood in which all participants were tested on the basic management in various case scenarios. And the workshop was wrapped up by a closing ceremony on 16th February, 2014 in which the renowned faculty presented souvenirs and certificates to all participants and volunteers.

The 3rd ACNS Educational Course would not have been possible without the immense support from our Medical Director Dr. Salman Faridi, who has always been the backbone in every course and activity that takes place in our institute. The faculty went on a tour of Moenjo Daro for a day on last day. They visited the 5000 yr old site and also Kot Diji fort and Sadhu Bela in Sukkur.
