WORLD SPINAL COLUMN SOCIETY TRAINING YOUNG SURGEONS Department of Neurosurgery at Liaquat National Hospital & Medical College in collaboration with World Spinal Column Society and Pakistan Society of Neurosurgeons organized a 3-day comprehensive �hands on� spine workshop from 3rd to 5th Feb 2011 at the Liaquat National Hospital & Medical College, Karachi. This was in continuity with the previous workshop held at Karachi in 2009 and various international courses that the World Spinal Column Society had conducted in training Spinal surgeons all over the world. The first day was on Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery (MISS) and Endoscopic disc surgery. Mehmet Zileli, Douglas Orr, Joachim Oertel, IftikharUlHaq. Vassilis Lykomitros, Gregory Trost and Muhammad Imtiaz discussed various minimally invasive spine procedures and techniques. At the end of the lectures, different cases were discussed. They were presented by Gregory Trost, the healthy interactive discussion provided great hearing opportunity for all the participants. Dinner was organized at DHA Golf Club. International guest faculty including World spinal Column Society President, Mehmit Zileli, Course Director Douglas Orr from Cleveland Clinic and Salman Sharif from Liaquat National Hospital and Medical College, Karachi and all other participants were present. The guest of honour was Dr. Salman Faridi, Medical Director of Liaquat National Hospital and Medical College who was very pleased by the size and magnitude of the conference. He welcomed all the international faculty members who came all the way across despite the uneven situations of the country especially Karachi. He also adored the clinical and hands on sessions arranged by the organizers. President Pakistan Society of Neurosurgeons Professor Dr Tariq Salahuddin also welcomed the distinguished guests and admired the efforts of the faculty. Prof Joachim Oertel pleased everyone with his humor and thanked the organizers. In the end Dr Salman Sharif thanked everyone including the organizers, administration at LNH, faculty and praised all participants involved in the course. On Second Day Dr.Iftikharul Haq (Canada), Dr. Mehmet Zileli (Turkey), Dr. Douglas Orr (USA), Dr. Amjad Shad (UK) on craniocervical and disc arthroplasty followed by hands on cadaver session. After this session, Dr. Mehmet Zileli, Dr. Salman Sharif and Prof. Gregory Trost delivered their lectures on dorsal cervical approaches, fixation techniques and cervical trauma management. Dr. Muhammad Imran presented different cases of cervical spine fixations and discussed them with the faculty and participants. In the afternoon, Crabbing on old heritage fishing boats was arranged for faculty and participants from Manora. Hot food directly from the stove was served to the guest. Seeing the sunset on Karachi bay with friends from all over the world was a very relaxing site. KarachiSpine2011 was a comprehensive course utilizing the hands-on and didactic sessions, supervised by experienced and world renowned faculty including Course Directors Dr. Salman Sharif (Karachi) and Dr. Douglas Orr (Cleveland Clinic, USA) and honoured guest facultyProf. Mehmet Zileli , President WSCS (Izmir, Turkey), Prof. Gregory Trost (USA), Prof. Joachim Oertel (Homberg, Germany), Dr. Iftikharul Haq (Canada), Ioannis Polythodorakis (Athens, Greece), Dr. Amjad Shad (Coventry, UK), Dr. Azmi Alias (Malaysia), Dr. Imtiaz Tariq (Saudi Arabia), Dr. Vassilis Lykomitros (Greece) and Dr. Mohammad Imran (Karachi). This intensive course emphasized the fundamentals of spine surgery. This will help improve the basic as well as the latest surgical skills concerning different spinal pathologies amongst the young neurosurgeons in this part of the world. At the closing ceremony on 5th February 2011, Souvenirs and certificates were presented to the faculty while the participants received their certificates.
